Welcome to Ferndale

Your health is our primary concern

Ferndale Nursing Home is a care home for the elderly, housed in a beautiful detached house in the exclusive area of Southgate in Crawley. We are registered to accommodate up to 28 people aged 65 and over, including married couples and partners.

Our manager is Mr Ramesh Mannick, RMN, who has over 40 years of experience in care, and our registered provider is Ferndale Healthcare Limited.

We have 18 single and 5 double bedrooms, most with en-suite facilities, and a TV and telephone are available in all rooms. A passenger lift serves all three floors.

Our rooms are all individually decorated, and residents are encouraged to bring their own personal possessions to create a “home from home” feel.

At Ferndale, care is personal. We are a small, family-run home registered for up to 28 residents, which means our team truly gets to know each person, their history, their preferences and their routines, and shapes their care around them.

We provide 24-hour nursing care for people aged 65 and over, including dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s care and respite, and we welcome married couples and partners. Whether someone needs a little support or more complex nursing, our registered nurses and carers are always close by, day and night.

Everything we do is guided by dignity, kindness and respect. From medication and personal care to a warm meal, a chat in the garden or help getting to an appointment, we are here to make every day comfortable, safe and as fulfilling as possible.

Our rooms are individually decorated, and we encourage residents to bring their own furniture and personal possessions to create a true “home from home”. We offer 19 single and 3 double bedrooms, many with ensuite facilities, and TV and telephone points in every room.

Fresh, home-cooked food every day

Our chef Glenn prepares nutritious, home-cooked meals on the premises daily, with a choice at every meal. Residents can dine in our communal dining room or enjoy meals in their own room, and family and friends are always welcome to join.

Set in Crawley, West Sussex, Ferndale has a lovely, secure garden with seating and a summer house. We actively encourage residents to enjoy the outdoors in the warmer months, a calm, safe place to relax with family.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ferndale currently accepting new residents?+

Yes, we are welcoming new residents to our care home. Please get in touch to register your interest and we can arrange a tour so you can see the home and meet our friendly staff.

Can I come and tour Ferndale?+

Absolutely, we would like you to come and have a tour, it is the best way to get a feel for Ferndale and determine whether we will be a good fit for your loved one. You can meet our friendly carers and management, and they can answer any specific questions you may have.

Are friends and family able to visit residents?+

We welcome and encourage family and friends to visit their loved ones. If you are not able to visit you are welcome to telephone, send post, email or gifts. You can, of course, also take residents out for visits, day trips or holidays.

How many rooms does Ferndale have?+

We have 19 single and 3 double bedrooms, most with en-suite facilities and a TV in every room.

How are residents being mentally and physically stimulated?+

In conjunction with our carers and dedicated activities manager, our team put together daily and weekly activities for all residents. These activities include; Floor basketball, Word games, Movement to Music, Quizzes, Bingo, Colouring & Painting, Balloon play, Story-time / read aloud, Board games, Crossword club, Baking, and Art club, Activities with care staff and Word Games to name a few.

Can residents receive post and gifts?+

Yes. We welcome friends and family to continue to send post, donations and gifts to residents in our care homes. Some of our residents have recently celebrated birthdays and have enjoyed receiving gifts.

Is the food cooked fresh on the premises?+

Absolutely. All food is freshly cooked on the premises, and special needs can be catered for by the chef. Roast dinners are a firm favourite of the residents and vegetarian alternatives are available too. We ensure that all our residents get a nutritionally balanced diet and so we offer a varied menu throughout the day with many choices. Early morning cup of tea 6.45am - 7.00am Breakfast 7.30am - 8.15am Morning coffee 10.30am - 10.45am Lunch 12.30 pm - 1.30pm Afternoon tea 3.00pm - 3.15pm Supper 5.30pm - 6.30pm Evening drink 7.45pm - 8.00pm Drinks and snacks are available as and when required and on-demand.

Can we still use our GP or do you have a retained GP?+

You can continue to use your own GP if you wish. Most long-term residents register with a local Crawley GP surgery, and a GP visits Ferndale regularly.

What other additional medical care do you offer?+

We can liaise with and make referrals to any specialist services and facilities through the GP. We have a chiropodist that visits every 6 weeks and is available to residents. We have regular visits from Specsavers for eye testing, ophthalmic services and hearing, and can arrange additional visits as required with these or other providers. We can arrange dentist appointments on request.

Do you carry out regular eye tests on all residents?+

Yes. Twice per year Visioncall attends to carry out eye tests on all residents. If we feel an additional test is required outside of these twice-yearly bookings we are able to organise accordingly.

Does Ferndale arrange for a regular dentist visit?+

We don’t have a regular dentist who comes to visit our residents, however, we can organise appointments upon requests from either the resident or friends and family.

Is there parking available?+

Yes. We have a car park at the front of the building.

Can residents decorate and furnish their own room?+

We regularly update our rooms and they are furnished, however if a resident wishes to make changes or bring items of furniture or their own TV this can be accommodated.

Can residents have their own telephone in their room?+

Yes. If a resident wants to have a landline we can help facilitate the installation, however the phone bills must be set up for the resident or a family member to pay directly. Of course, residents are welcome to bring a mobile phone.

Is there a call system in the room?+

Yes. All rooms are fitted with an emergency call system that is connected to central points in the home so carers can hear and respond.

How many sockets does each room have?+

Each room has 3 electrical sockets.

Where is the dining room?+

We have a lounge/ dining room on the ground floor at the rear of the building with views to the garden, along with a separate lounge on the ground floor at the front and a small quiet lounge/ hairdressing room on the 1st floor. All communal areas have toilet facilities within easy reach.

Are both baths and showers available within the home?+

Yes. Each bath is a mobility bath providing easy access for residents. En-suite bathrooms have a mobility bath or shower.

Are all areas of the home accessible to wheelchair users?+

Mostly. All ground floor areas, including the garden, are accessible, and we have a lift to the first floor. There are five 1st floor rooms that do not have step-free access.

Are residents involved in decisions?+

Yes absolutely. In daily life residents are encouraged to be as independent as they are able and make decisions themselves. We hold regular resident/ family meetings and conduct surveys to ensure we are meeting needs, understand any concerns and hear suggestions.

Can we ring and speak to residents?+

Yes. If a resident does not have a landline or mobile phone you can ring the main Ferndale number, our phones are cordless, enabling residents to take a call privately in their room.

Are pets allowed?+

Pets are allowed to visit but not stay within the home.

Are there arrangements for religious observance?+

We have a regular Anglican church service within the home; we can arrange services for other faiths on request.

Can a resident look after their own money?+

Absolutely if they wish to. Alternatively, we can hold ‘petty cash’ on their behalf if preferred or add any expenses (e.g. chiropody or hairdressing) to the monthly invoice.

Are residents accompanied for visits to medical services?+

If they wish to be accompanied, this can be done by family or a friend. If a resident is unable to undertake the visit on their own and no family or friend is available, then a carer will accompany the resident however there will be an additional charge.

Do residents have a choice about meals?+

Yes. Each day there are 2 choices for lunch and supper, every resident is asked which they prefer or an alternative is found. Our chefs take pride in creating menus to be varied and interesting, cater to dietary requirements and based on resident feedback/ requests.

Can residents eat in their rooms?+

Yes, if they wish to eat in their room this is available. We do however encourage residents to eat in the dining room whenever possible for the social aspect.

Can family and friends eat at Ferndale?+

Yes, absolutely. It is always helpful to know if a resident is expecting a guest for lunch so we can ensure sufficient food, there is an additional charge for a guest meal.

Are residents able to pursue their hobbies and interests?+

Yes. If they are able to do so independently that will be encouraged and we have activities coordinators who engage with the residents to understand what hobbies and interests they have and assist where needed.

How are the residents being mentally and physically stimulated?+

The team put together daily and weekly activities for our residents. These include: Word games, movement to music, chair-based fitness and mobility, bingo, knit and natter, handbells, craft activities, animal encounters and external entertainers such as singers, musicians and choirs.

Are residents able to use the garden?+

Yes, and we actively encourage this in the warmer months. We have a lovely, secure garden with seating and a summer house. Residents can enjoy the garden on their own, with family/ friends or a carer and we hold activities outside when weather permits, including planting up pots and the summer party.
